1.Pu'er tea

Pu'er is the name of the town from which this tea was originally bought and sold. Unlike any other tea, the fermentation process can take anywhere from one to fifty years and is considered a medicinal tea by many Chinese. Dr. Doris Rathgeber, a specialist in TCM from Body & Soul Health Clinic, advises drinking it after a meal as it helps digestion. It is warm in nature and thus suitable on cold days and for fighting off flus and colds. It is also believed to lower blood pressure and helps to detoxify the liver- good to know for those who lead particularly stressful or epicurean lifestyles. The leaves of Pu抏r tea are sold in solid bricks to retain an earthy flavor for longer periods of time.

2.Oolong (Wulong) tea

Many of the legends that describe the origins of oolong tea explain its fermentation process, which lies somewhere between black and green tea. According to one legend, Wu Liang (later corrupted into Wulong) discovered this brew after being distracted by a deer and coming back to find the tea leaves partially oxidized. Popularly accompanied with dim sum, Oolong cha combines the health benefits of both black and green tea but to a lesser degree. Dr. Rathgeber tells SH that like green tea, oolong is cool in nature and activates the enzymes in the stomach responsible for breaking down oils consumed during a fatty meal. Its caffeine content lies between green and black tea. The discerning tea drinker would describe it as bitter to taste but, like a fine wine, it has a sweet aftertaste.

3.Herbal tea

Herbal teas (known as hua cha in China) don抰 usually contain actual tea leaves and are caffeine-free. The widely popular chrysanthemum tea is purported to prevent sore throats and reduce fever. Experts at the Herb Store on Fumin Lu recommend taking rosehip tisane to promote your immune system as it contains 20 times more vitamin C than a lemon. Lavender tisane can also be found at the Herb Store for those who are in need of a good night抯 rest as the soothing scent has a relaxing effect. Different herbal teas usually cater to specific ailments and most are said to have mild medicinal properties, but it is recommended to consult a doctor before self-treating.

4.Green tea

Due to its minimal fermentation, green teas contain a high concentration of antioxidants. Although it has a shorter shelf life than other teas and generally loses flavor within a year, this tea is said to reduce the risk of cancer and improve cognition. As a staple of the Japanese diet, this tea is claimed to be part of the reason why they have the longest lifespans in the world. Doctor Li Jie, a registered TCM doctor, suggests drinking it in the summer as it is cool in nature and can cool off internal heat. Although it certainly isn抰 a cure, research in the medicinal properties of green tea has consistently found it to reduce the risk of cancer and lower cholesterol.

5.Black tea

Black tea, commonly known as red tea (hong cha) in China, is the most widely consumed tea in the world. Unlike green tea, the tea leaves of hong cha are fermented, which accounts for its higher concentration of caffeine and more robust flavor. Due to its longer oxidation, black teas retain their flavor for far longer. Dr. Li Jie advises drinking hongcha in the winter as it is warm in nature. As a stimulant for the central nervous system, the high amount of caffeine found in most black teas promotes alertness and wards off fatigue.
